Quick sidenote; did you know that the Xbox 360 launched seven years ago? WTF?… Incidentally, that is by far the longest any gaming system has been out without its successor being launched. Just for some perspective, the NES was out for five years before Super Nintendo which was followed by 64 in 1996 (5 years later)…a total of ten years. So, the length of time you’ve had your 360 is as if you bought an NES at launch and played all the way until Super Mario Kart. Feel old yet?
In all that time, Nintendo never reported an annual loss…Until last year, that is.
So, here we are, 2012 and the only new gaming system being released for this holiday is the Wii U. What’s the Wii U?…Well, I am not really sure, exactly, but here’s the trailer for it, from IGN:
So, it’s part controller, part handheld game, part tablet?…All gimmick. I mean, I may be wrong, but I think we may have a problem here, Houston. This thing looks pretty cool (in function, NOT in design), but let’s be honest. Handhelds are dead since the app store…The drawing feature will be fun for a while, then abandoned (you can draw on your tablet…do you?)…and, who the F plays Backgammon?
This doesn’t bode well for Nintendo, especially with the loss last year. And that makes me sad. I don’t want a world without Nintendo in it. But, numbers is numbers, and Microsoft is the console company.
Anyway, if you are interested, CNet reported that a photo surfaced of possible launch titles for the Wii U. It is not certain that these will be the games that drop at launch, but probable.
